UNDERSTANDING
PAH

What is PAH?

People with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) have an imbalance of 1 or more of 3 natural substances, causing the blood vessels in their lungs to become narrowed. When these 3 substances are out of balance, it is harder to keep blood flowing through the lungs and this causes symptoms of PAH, such as shortness of breath and fatigue when doing activities.

There are medicines that address each of those 3 imbalances, or pathways, associated with PAH. Each PAH medicine targets only one of those pathways.

What is Prostacyclin? [pra·stuh·si·klin]

Prostacyclin is one of the pathways associated with PAH. Prostacyclin helps ensure blood vessels are healthy and stay open. People who have PAH may not produce enough prostacyclin in their lungs.
